Tinnitus is usually a sign of hearing damage, typically from noise exposure. It is commonly described as ringing, buzzing, crickets, or static. Tinnitus can be aggravated by alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, sodium, stress, some medications (e.g. aspirin), and loud noise or music.
Recent developments in technology have led to the introduction of tinnitus masking hearing aids. These devices can provide amplification to overcome hearing loss as well as provide subtle masking noise to reduce the perception of tinnitus.
